How to Use Your Desk Height Result

The result from this calculator is a recommended starting range, not an exact measurement. After setting your desk within this range, sit or stand in your normal working position and check how your body feels.

For a sitting desk, adjust your chair and desk together. Start by setting your chair so your feet are supported on the floor and your knees are comfortably bent. Then adjust the desk so your shoulders remain relaxed, your elbows stay comfortably close to your body, and your forearms are approximately level with the keyboard. Keep your wrists in a comfortable, neutral position.

If the desk feels too high, lower the desk if possible. If it cannot be lowered, you may need to adjust your chair height, but make sure your feet remain supported. A footrest can help if raising the chair leaves your feet unsupported.

If the desk feels too low, raise the desk if possible rather than slouching or bending forward to reach it.

Adjust Your Workstation in This Order

1. Calculate your starting desk height
Use the calculator above to get your recommended range.

2. Adjust your chair
Make sure your feet are supported and your knees are comfortably bent.

3. Adjust your desk
Set the desk so your shoulders stay relaxed and your forearms are approximately level with the keyboard.

4. Check your keyboard and mouse
Keep them close enough that you do not have to reach forward. Keep your wrists comfortable and relatively neutral.

5. Adjust your monitor
Position the screen so you can work without repeatedly bending your neck downward or reaching forward.

6. Move regularly
Change your position, stand when appropriate, and take short movement breaks instead of staying in one posture for hours.

Remember: Change Position Regularly

Even a well-adjusted workstation is not ideal if you stay completely still for hours. The goal is not to find one “perfect” posture. The goal is to create a comfortable workstation that supports a relatively neutral position while allowing you to move and change positions regularly.
